A journey through time, etched in our walls

From humble

BEGINNINGS

Our story began with a forgotten house, built in 1930 in the Early Edwardian architectural style. Originally constructed to house the headmaster of the Secondary School—relocated from the old schoolhouse now serving as a museum—it later became workers’ housing for Searle Enterprises.

Over time, the house fell into disrepair, hidden among overgrown bushes, waiting for new life. Laurette and Willem Swanepoel, with a passion for restoring old homes, saw beauty and potential in this hidden gem. Despite financial constraints, they took a leap of faith, securing the property with the help of profits from the local hardware store they owned in Willowmore.

Their journey was filled with challenges and triumphs, navigating the complexities of financing and renovations. The community rallied around them, with friends and family lending a hand to transform the neglected space into a vibrant hub. Named after the two trees that once stood proudly on the property, Twin Trees Restaurant opened its doors in December 2020. Although one tree was lost in 2024, the restaurant continues to honour its memory and the roots that inspired its name.

Today, Twin Trees stands as a symbol of resilience, community, and the joy of gathering around good food and wine.

The heart

BEHIND TWIN TREES

At the heart of Twin Trees Restaurant is Laurette, a woman with a vision for creating unforgettable experiences.

After selling the hardware store and settling in Great Brak River in 2019, Laurette found herself searching for a purpose and place of belonging - that's when the idea of Twin Trees was born. What started as a humble waffle house has blossomed into a full-fledged restaurant, complete with a wine boutique, and a commitment to sourcing local ingredients and supporting local artisans. Her love for animals is evident as you meet fellow residents, Bella, Chivas, and Toepie.

As Twin Trees continues to grow, Laurette remains at its helm, with exciting plans for the future.
